What is HPV

Understand what is HPV is very important if you want to remove your warts. Warts are small growths which raised above the surface of the skin. They are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is a group of more than 100 related virus. Each one of them is labelled with a number and is the cause of specific kinds of warts. For example, HPV types 1, 2 and 4 are the cause of plantar warts whereas types 6, 11, 30 and 51 are the cause of genital warts.

Infections from the human papillomavirus are very common. They are usually not harmful or painful if treated in time. HPV infections can go away within 8 to 12 months, but there is a huge downside in waiting for them to pass. Since warts are very contagious once they form, it is very easy for them to spread from one part of your body to another or even to infect other people. This is why you should always remove them as soon as they manifest to prevent further contamination.

How do you get HPV?

The HPV virus is transmitted from person to person through physical or indirect contact with an infected person or an infected object. The places where it is more likely to get the virus are swimming pools, public showers and bathrooms. In the case of genital warts the easiest way is through any kind of unprotected sexual activity (vaginal, anal and oral). For this reason I strongly suggest you always use protection, especially if you have intercourse with a new partner.

Usually, the virus enter inside the body through cuts or damages on the skin. For example, if you have the habit to bite your fingernails you are exposing your hands to a high risk of infection. Cuts from shaving also provide an opening for infection. This is why men have often warts on the face and women on the legs. To avoid any possible self-contamination, a recommendation I want to give you is to always wash your hands if you happen to touch accidentally one of your warts. This will make sure from you won’t spread the virus on other areas of your body.

HPV symptoms and treatment

The main symptom of a HPV infection is the formation of warts on your skin. First you are going to experience itch and pain in the area. After few days, you will notice a tiny growth on the skin with small black dots in it. You should know that these are clotted blood vessels, a common characteristic of warts. It is very important to not mistake this black dots for blackheads or pimples, because differently from these warts are very contagious. To be sure you have developed a wart, keep in mind that warts are:

  • raised hard growth on the skin
  • rough to the touch
  • present small black dots

Since warts are very contagious, it is always better to treat them immediately. Therapies that doctors usually suggest for their removal are laser surgery, cryotherapy, surgical excision or electrocautery. All of these procedure are used to remove your warts from the skin and in most of the cases they are not only costly but also very painful. The biggest problem with them is that they can only remove warts but not the virus which has caused them. This means that the human papillomavirus will remain inside your body and develop new warts only after some time.

In most of the cases, when you get infected you will become aware of the infection only after some time. This is because at the beginning the body will not to show any visible symptom. Sometimes the virus can stay hidden for months or even for years before you’ll know that it is inside your body. When it is going to manifests, warts will develop on your skin in the point where the virus has entered in your body.

In the best-case scenario if you get infected with HPV, you will have to deal with the growth of flat warts. In the worst of the possible cases, you will have to deal with genital warts or oral warts. You have to be aware that, if not eradicated in time, the virus can lead to more dangerous diseases like cancer in places like the uterus, esophagus, anus, oral cavity or larynx.

Human Papillomavirus infection symptoms:

The Human Papillomavirus form as warts on the skin. At the beginning when the warts starts forming they can be mistaken for blackheads or pimples because of their look and of the itchiness of the area. Only when they are completely formed it will be possible to determine if you have been infected with HPV or not. In the case you get warts inside your mouth you will notice them as small withe growth and experience sore throat. Because of this sometimes are mistaken for throat patches. When the virus attacks the private parts it can cause the formation of genital warts which are going to produce itch and pain in the area.

Human Papillomavirus transmission:

The Human Papillomavirus is usually transmitted through physical contact with an infected person or touching and object or a surface previously infected. The most common places where the transmission is more likely are swimming pools, dressing rooms and showers (all places where you can get in contact with other people or others’ belongings). In the case of genital warts, unprotected sexual activities are the easiest way to get infected. Because of this I suggest using protections all the times.

When infected with genital warts it is recommended to avoid any kind of sexual activities (vaginal and anal penetration or oral sex). Also, it is very important to avoid contacts between genital parts. This is because, it is possible to get infected also without penetration. Also you should always keep in mind that there is the possibility to get genital warts even if neither of the partners are not showing any sign of infection. This is because the virus may have not manifested yet.
