Periungual Warts

Periungual warts are a very problematic skin infection. They can grow around fingernails or toenails and since they are very contagious they can easily spread on other parts of the body. Their are small in size and you can recognize them from their rough surface which resemble a cauliflower. The main issue with this kind of warts is the place where they form. Periungual warts can grow either on hands or feet. In both cases they can cause not only pain and discomfort but also problems to handle objects in the case of warts on hands or to walk if you contract plantar warts.

What causes periungual warts?

All type of warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus usually enter inside the body through scratches or cuts on the skin. This is why if you are a nail biter it will increase the possibility to be infected. The virus is transmitted trough direct or indirect contact. That means you can contract the HPV directly from another person or indirectly touching an object or an infected surface. Shaking hands, sharing a towel or walking barefoot in public places like showers or swimming pools are just few example of how you can contract periungual warts.

One of the main cause of infection is usually a weak immune system. When your body is healthy and strong, it eliminates the virus before he can actually infect your body. When your immune system is weakened it will be easier for the virus to enter your body and to cause the formation of warts. Period of high stress, fatigue or illness are all good times for the virus to strike. This is why I suggest you always have a good diet to keep your body healthy and ready if the virus will try to infect you.

Periungual warts treatment

Periungual warts can be very hard to remove especially if they spread to the nail plate or under it. In the latter case they are called subungual warts which are not only painful but can also damage your nail plate if left untreated. The conventional treatments that doctors will suggest to remove periungual warts are:

Salicylic acid: Salicylic acid is a topical medication that will exfoliate the warts. It is not going to treat your internal symptoms but only to destroy the infected skin.

Cryotherapy: This procedure uses liquid nitrogen to destroy the infected cells. Compare to the salicylic acid it may require a less number of treatment but it can cause pain and blistering.

Laser surgery: Laser surgery is only recommend when other treatments have failed. The procedure works by removing the warts with a beam of light. It will not remove the HPV from your system and most of the times it will leave your skin with permanent scars.

The treatments I have shown you are what doctors or specialist suggest to remove warts. The main issue with these procedure is that they only try to eliminate the warts and not the virus which is behind them. Also, in the case of periungual warts they could be quite painful and dangerous. This is why I always suggest finding a better solution, especially if your children have contracted this type of warts. One of the best option you can choose from is to use a natural remedy. The reason is a natural remedy will not have any side-effect and it will not cause any pain. There are specific herbs that can cure your warts and at the same time eliminate the virus from your body.

Seed Wart

seed wartA seed wart is a type of wart that grows on hands and on feet. Similar to other common warts, a seed wart looks like a small dot and this is why it is often mistaken for corns or calluses.

The black dots appearance is due to the blood vessels that have grown inside and around the wart. When they are classified as palmer warts they usually develop on fingers, around the nails, on the back of the hand or on the palm. In the case of plantar warts, they may grow on or under the foot.

How do you get seed warts?

Warts are very contagious and their transmission can happen through direct and indirect contact. Since seed warts are either warts on hand or planter warts, shacking the hand of an infected person or walking bare foot on an previously infected floor are both very easy way to get infected. As all types of warts, a seed wart is also caused by the human papillomavirus, a very contagious virus that survives where there is heat and moisture. This is the reason why changing rooms, public showers or swimming pools are the easiest place for it to be transmitted.

Children and people with a weak immune system are the easiest target for this infection. You should also know if you get infected, that when a seed wart develop on your hand, it is possible to spread it on other parts of the body just touching them. So, even if sometimes seed warts can go away without any cure, by the time they are disappear you have probably already infected many other areas.

Treatments for seed wart

The first thing to do in case you develop a seed wart is to be very careful not transmit the virus to other people or to infect objects that other people can use. This is why, you should remove them as soon as they form. Conventional medicine offers few possibilities for their removal:

Cryotherapy: with this treatment, the warts are frozen through the use of liquid nitrogen and than removed. After the treatment it is possible to be left with scars.

Surgical Treatment: in this way the warts are going to be removed with a surgical cut. It is a painful way but also very quick.

Laser Surgery: a surgical laser is utilized to remove the warts without any pain. It is a very expensive option but also the most effective.

The worst thing about this treatments is not that they are painful, very expensive or they can live scars, but is the fact that they DO NOT actually solve your problem. This is because they just remove the warts and not the virus which has caused them. So, after you have invested so much to have one of these treatments, your seed wart is going to develop again maybe in just few days.

Common Warts

Common warts, as all types of warts, are caused by the human papillomavirus. They are skin growths and they can be easily identified from their rough surface that looks like a cauliflower. Their color is usually pink or white. Common warts can develop on the skin in any time during your life, but some recent studies have found that their manifestation is more frequent during childhood. This is because, children have less developed immune system compared to adults and so, they are more easily to get infected.

How many types of common warts exist?

Warts are often developed on fingers and on hands because we use them for every daily activity. In reality, they can develop everywhere on the skin depending where the HPV has entered.

common warts

The areas where this type of warts usually grows are the back of fingers, the back of hands, beneath and around fingernails and on the sole of the foot. Sometimes, they can also grow on elbows and knees. Warts that grow on the sole of the foot are the more painful, due to the pressure that is constantly exercised on them. This is the case of plantar warts, which become even more painful when they grow around or underneath fingernails. In some severe cases the increasingly growth of this kind of wart has caused the nail to fall off. Another very unpleasant manifestation of common warts is filiform warts. This types of warts often develop after shaving and it can grow around the area of the mouth, the nose or the neck.

Treatments for common warts:

This type of skin infection is usually removed through surgical procedures or cauterized with a treatment called electrocautery. In both circumstances, you will be left with scab or scars. Another possible treatment is cryotherapy which allows to remove the warts thanks to the very low temperature. In addition to these treatments there are a number of creams and lotions that promises to remove your warts just with their application on the skin. As you may guess they are not very effective.

In most of the cases surgical treatments to remove warts are very painful and will require many sessions and a long time to show some kind of result. This is because modern medicine is too focused on trying to remove the warts from your skin instead of eliminating their cause. What is the result of this? The result is that even if you succeed to remove the warts, they are going to grow again in the future. This will happen until you don’t eradicate completely the Human Papillomavirus from your body.

Warts on Hands

Warts on hands are a skin infection that can be very problematic to cure. This is because, when warts grow on hands, it is going to be very easy to spread them on other parts of the body or to transmit the infection to other people.

warts on hands

The areas where they form are fingers and fingernails. They are usually not painful unless they grow under the nail plate. In this case they are not going to be only painful but also very difficult to remove. Another way to refer to hand warts is periungual warts, when they grow around the nail, and subungual warts, when they grow beneath it.

Symptoms and transmission of hand warts:

Warts are small rough growth which develop on the skin after an infection from the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus can penetrate inside the body through area of broken skin such as small cuts or scratches. Hand warts can be transmitted either through direct or indirect contact with a person or an object. This means that you can get the virus just shacking hands with an infected person or just drying your hands on a towel which has been previously infected.

Warts on hands can be spread very easily because we constantly touch things around us or our body without even realizing it. This makes very high the possibility to infect object and also to infect other people when we interact with them. I strongly suggest you have your hands covered with gloves all the time if you have warts on them. This will make sure you will not accidentally spread the HPV to other parts of your body, to other people or contaminate any object.

Cures and treatments for warts on hands:

Since hand warts are going to make your life much more difficult, I am sure that if you have them you are already looking for a way to remove them. Most of the times, this type of warts can be considered flat warts since they are also flat, rough and have a light pink or yellow/brown color. Like for them, there are few available treatment for their removal:

  • Electrocautery: A medical probe heated with electric current is used to burn the wart and cauterized it. As you can imagine this procedure is very painful and can leave visible scars.
  • Surgery: It consists in a surgical incision that will remove the infected tissues. If warts has grown beneath fingernails, the procedure will remove also a part of the nail. This of course is going to be painful.
  • Cryotherapy: The warts are going to be frozen with liquid nitrogen and then removed. Since it can be very dangerous and leave visible marks on your skin, this procedure is only used when other have failed.

Something you should know about these treatments is that they are not only invasive and painful but they usually leave scars on the skin. Because of this a lot of pharmaceutical companies are now selling over-the-counter drugs that try to remove warts without any side effect. These products are creams or lotions that you have to apply for several weeks or months. They never solve your problem completely. This is because no external treatment is able to eradicate the HPV from the body and even if the warts are physically removed, they are going to grow again since the virus will be still inside your body.
